Country | Georgia |
Region | Kakheti |
Protected Designation of Origin | Kindzmarauli |
Wine maker | Telavi Marani Wine Cellar |
Grape varieties | Saperavi |
Terroir | The Kindzmaraul region has a temperate, subtropical-inclining climate with hot summers and moderate winters. Fourteen different soil types have been found, from loam to clay and limestone. The grapes here usually develop a relatively high sugar level and this is probably why this appellation is famous for its semi-sweet red wines. |
Harvest method | Handpicked. |
Yield per hectare | 8 tons per hectare. |
Vinification | The grapes are destemmed and fermented at a controlled temperature (23-28°C) in stainless steel tanks. After 5-7 days of maceration, when the desired residual sugar content is usually reached, the fermentation is stopped by cooling to freezing point. The fermentation stops at this temperature and the wine retains its natural sweetness and freshness. The wine is then kept cold at about 0°C before filtering and bottling. |
Impression | Purple red with an inky red tint along the edge of the glass. Smells like blackberry jam and wild raspberry. Tastes like sweet, ripe blackberry and raspberry jam. No more than half sweet, and with very fresh acidity and lively fruit. |
Did you know? | Since 1942, the Kindzmarauli appellation has been making semi-sweet red wines from the Saperavi grape. This type of wine has traditionally been very popular in Russia, where it has always had a sweeter taste than in Europe. |
