The Kvanchkara appellation is located in the Racha region in northwestern Georgia. and therefore not in the 'wine province' of Kakhetia. The vineyards are located in a valley along the banks of the Rioni river, mostly on the right bank and south facing. The climate is temperate with sufficient rainfall, mild winters and warm summers.
Harvest method handpicked
Yield per hectare 8 tons per hectare.
Vinification The grapes were picked by hand at the end of October, beginning of November. They were destemmed, pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature (23-28°C) in stainless steel tanks. After 5-7 days of maceration, when the desired level of residual sugar has been reached, the fermentation is stopped by cooling the must to freezing point. The yeast cells then die and the wine retains its natural sweetness and freshness. The wine is then kept cold at about 0°C for a while before bottling to stabilize it.
Impression Light ruby red color. In the nose raspberry, strawberry and roasted almonds. Semi-sweet, but thanks to its fresh acidity, the wine is very lively. It tastes like sweet strawberries and dried red berries.
Did you know? The Kvanchkara appellation has been around since 1932. The style of the area's wines was popular as early as the nineteenth century. Most wines are semi-sweet, but a handful of winemakers nowadays also make dry wines of remarkably good quality.
