Ask a random Georgian in the streets of Tbilisi about the best winery in his country and chances are high he will say Telavi Marani Wine Cellar. This ambitious wine house has been producing high quality wines in an international style for years.
Country | Georgia |
Region | Kakheti |
Wine maker | Telavi Marani Wine Cellar |
Grape varieties | Saperavi |
Terroir | The grapes come from the vineyard of the winery near the village Kondoli. The climate here is temperate, tending to subtropical, with hot summers and moderate winters. The bottom consists of brown earth and old river deposits. |
Harvest method | Handpicked. |
Vinification | The vineyard near the village of Kondoli was harvested green in August to reduce the grape yield to 4-5 tons per hectare and thus increase the quality and concentration of the remaining fruit. At the end of September, the grapes were harvested by hand, carefully destemmed and lightly crushed. They were done in Qvevri, buried in the floor of the winery. The fermentation took place with only natural yeasts. After the long maceration of about 6 months in Qvevri, the wine was carefully transferred to new oak barriques for a further aging of 24 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered, completed with 6 months of aging in the cellar before release. |
Impression | Deep red. Spicy on the nose, with vanilla and concentrated blueberries. In the mouth also blackberries, silky tannins. Full but soft and drinkable. Complex and convincing. Fresh fruit of black currant with spices and licorice. |
Did you know? | Georgian qvevri wines are rarely barrel aged after maceration in the qvevri. Telavi Marani has emphatically opted for this for its top line for many years in order to match the taste characteristics of the wines with the classic European style. |
