Ask a random Georgian in the streets of Tbilisi about the best winery in his country and chances are high he will say Telavi Marani Wine Cellar. This ambitious wine house has been producing high quality wines in an international style for years.
Country | Georgia |
Region | Kakheti |
Wine maker | Telavi Marani Wine Cellar |
Grape varieties | Mtsvane |
Terroir | The Mtsvane grapes grow in one vineyard in the Kondoli region of the Kakheti province with a soil of loam and limestone. The climate is subtropical to continental, influenced by the Caucasus Mountains on the north side and a mountain range on the south side of the valley. Cool air flows through the valley from the Caucasus Glaciers, creating a microclimate for high-quality viticulture with wide fluctuations between day and night temperatures. Perfect ripening conditions for the grapes. |
Harvest method | Handpicked. |
Yield per hectare | 5 tons per hectare. |
Vinification | In July the vineyard is 'green harvested' (part of the grapes have been removed to keep the best grapes and more concentrated juice). The grapes were harvested at the end of September. In the winery, the grapes were carefully destemmed and lightly crushed. They were then fermented in Qvevri's, dug into the floor of the winery. The fermentation took place with natural yeasts. After 6 months of maceration in the Qvevri, the resulting orange wine was gently transferred to new oak barriques for a further 10 months of maturation. The wine was lightly filtered, bottled and bottled for another year in the winery's cellar. |
Impression | Dense structure. Broad, powerful juice with tropical fruits of guava, caramel, white chocolate and mild tannins. The wood aging is recognizable. We recommend decanting for the first four years after the harvest year. This wine can be aged for more than 10 years. |
Alcohol | 13.00 % |
Did you know? | Fermentation and ripening of white grapes with the seeds and skins leads to a completely different wine style: 'orange wine'. However, this wine has subsequently undergone a further barrel aging, which gives it a more recognizable and accessible style. |
