Koncho & Co is a medium-sized Georgian wine company that produces both conventional wines and (orange) wines from the Qvevri (large amphorae). Koncho is located in the town of Kvareli at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. There is a lot of black slate in the vineyards here. The winemakers are Georgian but trained in Germany. They only use typical Georgian grape varieties. Many of Koncho's wines, including the orange wines, are aged in wood.
Country | Georgia |
Region | Kacheti |
Wine maker | Koncho & Co |
Grape varieties | Kisi |
Terroir | The grapes come from a vineyard in the Kindzmarauli appellation. It lies at the foot of the Caucasus and has a lot of black slate in the soil. |
Harvest method | Handpicked |
Yield per hectare | 6 tons per hectare. |
Vineyard treatment | Nee |
Vinification | The grapes are crushed slightly and then go for fermentation in a large qvevri (earthenware pot) of over 2 tons. The qvevri is buried in the ground to keep it cool. Nothing is added; the grapes ferment spontaneously and without affecting the temperature. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for another 4 to 5 months in the qvevri. Then it is aged in used large wooden barrels for 9 to 12 months. |
Impression | Light amber color. Smells like candied fruit and dried apricots. Soft in the mouth. No hard tannins but dried tropical fruit, orange peel, melon, ripe apples and hazelnuts. |
Did you know? | The Kisi is qualitatively one of the most interesting white grapes in Georgia. It produces fairly firm wines with good acidity. |
